        Leveraging the Power of Hemp
        and Other Natural Materials

        Hemp is the name for a variety of the Cannabis Sativa L plants, bred for its non-psychoactive properties and particularly its fibers. A ligno-cellulosic plant, it is among the bast family of natural fibers, and among the earliest (6,000 BC) and most widely cultivated crops in the world. Until the early 20th century, hemp was one of the most important industrial crops globally owing to its ease of cultivation, adaptability, processing flexibility, and ultimately its thousands of uses.
        Industrial hemp has been successfully grown (for research) in South Africa for over 30 years, and informally cultivated for centuries in provinces such as the Eastern Cape, which is considered among the best growing regions globally. Despite historical restrictions, today hemp is again legal in South Africa.
        TexTTan is working with, and sourcing hemp straw biomass from, permitted farmers located within 60km of our East London IDZ location. We are pioneering vertically-integrated hemp commercialization from Africa to the world and unleashing the power of natural fibers to transform the industrial economy.

        Hemp is a summer crop grown in South Africa typically from early Spring (September and October) and harvested after 90-160 days. It uses 75% less water than cotton and requires no pesticides. An excellent soil ameliorant, hemp also sequesters 8-20 Mt CO2e/ha.

        Hemp can be grown for grain (seed), straw (fiber), or inflorescence (flowers and leaves). TexTTan focuses on the straw, which must be mechanically separated into their component physical parts: fibers (short and long) and shivs (inner woody parts) before further processing. It is these separated parts that allow for multi-product development.

        Hemp and Its Chemical Parts

        Hemp is made up of cellulose (one of the building blocks of most plants), hemi-cellulose, and lignin, as well as smaller amounts of pectins, waxes, lipids etc. Various extraction processes are used to separate these chemical constituents before further processing.
